Sizing and venting air conditioning correctly

A rough rule of thumb is 100W of cooling per square metre for a standard office, but server rooms, glazed rooms, and marquees in direct sun need considerably more. Undersizing is the most common mistake: a unit that's too small runs continuously and still can't hold temperature on the hottest days.

Portable AC units need the exhaust hose vented outside, through a window, door gap, or ceiling tile, or the unit will simply recirculate the heat it's extracting. Evaporative coolers don't need venting but work best with good airflow and lose effectiveness in already-humid conditions.

Refrigerant work on split systems is covered by F-Gas regulations and should only be handled by a qualified engineer; hired portable and evaporative units are designed for straightforward plug-in use with no refrigerant handling required on your part.
