Choosing the right welding process

MIG welders are easiest to use and suit general steel fabrication, making them the default choice for most site and workshop repair work. TIG welders give the cleanest finish on stainless steel and aluminium but require more skill and a steadier hand. Arc (stick) welders are the most portable option and keep working outdoors in wind where gas-shielded processes would be disrupted.

MIG welders typically need argon/CO2 shielding gas, usually available from the depot separately, though flux-cored MIG wire is gasless and a practical option for outdoor or windy conditions. TIG welders need pure argon shielding gas. Confirm gas supply arrangements when booking so you're not caught short mid-job.

Welding fumes are a recognised health hazard under COSHH, and adequate ventilation or local exhaust extraction is essential, particularly in confined spaces. Full PPE including a welding helmet with the correct shade lens, heat-resistant gloves, and flame-resistant clothing is required regardless of process, and appropriate training is expected before operating hired welding equipment.
